Teenager Sloane Stephens Defeated Tennis Idol Serena Williams

Sloane Stephens, 19, can now proudly say that she is the girl who defeated one of the greatest tennis players, Serena Williams. With a huge triumphant smile on her face, Sloane Stephens completed the 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against Serena Williams at the Australian Open quarterfinals on Wednesday. The recent tennis match is the farthest that Sloane Stephens has ever reached in a Grand Slam competition. The teenager has always looked up to her idol Serena Williams and even placed posters of the tennis superstar on her bedroom wall. Serena Williams reigns in the women’s tennis division as a 15-time major winner and a five-time Australian Open champion. However, the Wednesday tennis match destroyed her 20-match winning streak. Williams suffered ankle and back injuries during the match resulting to a three-minute medical check-up on court. When asked about what Sloane Stephens think about her victory, the teenager only uttered the words: "I don't even know. Oh, my goodness." Sloane has already competed with Serena Williams in the past but the second match-up proved she is ready and determined to win. Sloane’s mother, Sybil Smith, revealed that her daughter was not really paranoid competing against Serena but she was in fact excited about the match-up. "She wasn't so concerned about the hype and playing the greatest of all time. She just changed her mind-set and said, 'You know, it's just another tennis match. I've got to go compete, no matter who I'm playing against’," Smith shared. Sloane Stephens originally comes from Plantation, Florida but she currently resides in Bel Air, California. During her free time, Sloane is nothing but your usual teenager/daughter who loves to send text messages or post comments on Twitter, hang out with friends and go to the malls for a shopping spree. Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts are definitely talking about this unexpected turn of events in the history of tennis. Hollywood as well as other sports legends are now aware of the name Sloane Stephens after her controversial win. "While it's not good for Serena, it's a great development for U.S. tennis. They've been waiting for a long time for someone to come to the forefront. It's too early to know what this will all mean but it's possible that they may have found the next up-and-coming female star,” Christine Brennan, a sports columnist for USA Today and sports consultant for ABC News, declared.
