Apple’s iPad and Other Tablets Increase Health Concerns with the Gadget’s Users
Apple’s iPad as well as other tablets are currently the most sought after device in the advanced world of technology. However, health experts are now warning the users to properly handle their gadgets otherwise they are at risk of experiencing body pain.
According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, there is an increase in the number of tablet users complaining with upper body pain possibly related to the hand-held gadget’s use. A businessman named Jeremy Asher shared that he spends about six hours of his daily busy schedule using a laptop, smart phone and a tablet until he began to experience pain in his body.
"I woke up one morning with an intensely sharp pain right around the shoulder blade. I thought perhaps it would go away after a night or two. But it didn't. In fact it seemed to be even worse and it was starting to even stop me from sleeping,” Asher revealed.
Jeremy Asher received treatment after he was diagnosed with a nerve problem. Unfortunately, his body pain experience is now becoming a widespread condition.
Amanda Stockton, a physiotherapist at Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, confirmed that she has been seeing numerous patients who complain about neck pain, shoulder pain, wrist pain and headaches. "When you're using a tablet, your neck is pointing sharply down so your joints are getting stiff and your nerves are possibly overworking,” Stockton explained.
Meanwhile, the said condition has been coined earlier this year as the “iPad shoulder” after Harvard University researchers studied the risks of tablet use.
Dr. Jack Dennerlein, who led the tablet use study, suggests to the gadget users that prevention is the key to avoid body pains. "A lot of this can lead to chronic neck pain. And who knows, over the long term, these chronic issues can lead to other chronic health issues such as arthritis,” Dr. Dennerlein stated.
Health experts advise these tablet users to keep the device at eye level and sit properly on a chair. They also added that the users should take regular breaks from using the device.
"Find support in how to hold it up so that you can look at it properly. Don't use your arms if you don't have to. Go hands free. Find a good case,” Dr. Dennerlein recommended.

German Researcher Claims Mayan Apocalypse is Re-scheduled on Christmas Eve
Apparently, the Mayan calendar doomsday scare continues. Nikolai Grube, a German researcher who is an expert in Mayan artifacts interpretation, claims that the world might end on Christmas Eve, December 24.
According to Grube, though most of the Mayan writings indicate the calendar’s end last December 21, there are many other dates mentioned including December 24. Many people have predicted that the dates could mean the Mayan Apocalypse.
"Two-thousand-twelve was a very interesting year for Mayan research," Nikolai Grube of the University of Bonn stated. Researchers were able to find the room of a Mayan scribe at the excavation sites in Xultun, Guatemala.
The walls of the scribe’s room are reportedly covered with numbers and images of calendar measurements which confirm the Mayans work with several astronomical cycles of the planets such as Mars, Venus and Mercury. The Mayans also attempted to forecast the solar and lunar eclipses.
The December 21 date indicated on the Mayan calendar is the end of the so-called “baktun.” This particular date is similar to the millennial change that happened last December 31, 1999 where people commemorated it worldwide. A “baktun” is a unit of time in the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar where it is divided into even longer phases.
“Baktun” represents 144,000 days or approximately 394 years. The Mayan calendar began about 5,125 years ago. According to the Mayan mythology, that was the time when the world was created with the belief there are also other worlds that existed in the past. However, harmonizing the present-day calendar with the Mayans may not be a good idea.
Nikolai Grube further added that a few days difference in the Mayan calendar is possible. Hence, this supports his claim that the end of the 13th “baktun” may not have really happened last December 21 but it could on December 24.
Meanwhile, at least 80% of all the identified Mayan writings have already been decoded and interpreted. There are several writings that mentioned dates far beyond than the December 21, 2012 Mayan Calendar end. "You find dates in Mayan texts that are thousands or millions of years into the future," Grube declared. However, the texts emphasized that the world still exists and the gods are still present which contradicts the Mayan apocalypse predictions.
Prince Harry Kills Taliban Chief in Afghanistan
For the first time, Prince Harry has reportedly killed a Taliban chief in Afghanistan. The Royal Prince, who is an Apache pilot, released a missile strike to eradicate the terrorist leader in the late of October.
"Big H is a legend. We were on patrol and the Apache helicopters were called in. We heard this posh voice come over the radio and knew it was Big H. They were tracking a Taliban leader. He was commander level,” an insider told The Sun.
The 28-year-old Apache pilot is responsible in maneuvering the aircraft and controlling the weapons. "The Apache then let off some Hellfire missiles and its 30mm cannon and 'boom'. It was Big H all the way,” the insider further shared.
Prince Harry is currently assigned in Helmand, Afghanistan. He has been flying daily combat missions aiding "troops in contact,” a code given when ground forces are occupied with enemy fighters.
Prince Harry was able to develop a close companionship in Helmand where his comrades gave him the moniker “Big H.” "He's like a normal squaddie. All the guys in Afghan have so much respect for him and love him. Big H is a legend, he's been out in Afghan and he's doing the business. All the guys love him - he's Big H. He likes a drink and a laugh and he's one of the lads,” the source told The Sun.
However, Prince Harry’s bravery still puts his life at risk which made his father, Prince Charles, express his anxiety for the safety of his son. "The younger one is at this moment in Afghanistan. Fortunately, he rings me every now and then,” Prince Charles recently told The Sun’s Military Awards.
Despite his worry, the 64-year-old Prince Charles still understands and supports the military duties of Prince Harry. "I really do understand the worry of service families when their loved ones are away serving in somewhere like Afghanistan. It's almost easier for those serving away than for those left behind because you worry all the time,” Prince Charles stated.
"So I do appreciate the extraordinary resilience and the unbelievable support provided by the families back here who encourage and remind their loved ones that they are there for them, despite what they have to put up with,” Prince Charles further added.
Prince Harry's recent tour of duty in Helmand is already his second military mission. Unknown to the public, he has served 77 days on the front line from 2007 to 2008 before shifting to choppers.
After passing the difficult Apache flier’s course in 2011, Prince Harry was deployed on a mission in September. After 18 months of meticulous training, Prince Harry was hailed as the Top Gun pilot in his class last February.

Oz Lotto Jackpot Prize Shoot Up To $100 Million
Oz Lotto Division 1 jackpot prize
continues to excite the players as it shoots up to a staggering $100 million.
It is now recorded as the biggest prize amount in the history of Australian lotto.
According to Theaustralian.com, the Oz Lotto Division 1 has
not yet declared a winner since the $13 million win of one unnamed lotto player
last August 28.
Jan Stewart, Chief Executive
Officer of Lotterywest, claimed that the “record breaking $100
million draw is likely to create great excitement across the nation.” With
that, expectations run high for Lotterywest to put up on the market 1.2 million
tickets for the next draw. "We're sure this draw will capture the
imagination of Lotto players around the State as they participate in the
largest jackpot in Australian Lotto history," Stewart further stated.
In the past eight
weeks, Lotterywest’s towering ticket sales has helped in raising an
approximated $16 million for the local community of Western Australia. Now, the
lotto jackpot draw for next week is estimated to further raise an amount of $9
million.
Even though the Oz
Lotto Division 1 did not have any lucky winners during the $70 million jackpot
draw, there are still some WA players who were able to win prizes in the other
divisions like the two fortunate players who will go home to with the Division
2 prize of $53,228.30.
Meanwhile, the Lotto
tickets are available until 5pm next Tuesday from the Lotterywest retailers
across WA or from their website: www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au.
Man Ascends One of the World’s Tallest Skyscrapers with His Bionic Leg
Who says having a disability ceases
someone to achieve something? Amputee Zac Vawter proved that climbing 103
floors of the Willis Tower in Chicago with his bionic or mind-controlled leg is
just a piece of cake. The 31-year-old Vawter made record as the first person to
complete the remarkable climb with a bionic leg in approximately 45 minutes.
In “SkyRise
Chicago,” a charity event that raises funds for Chicago’s Rehabilitation
Institute, Zac Vawter gladly took participation for his bionic leg’s first public
assessment after a motorcycle accident cost him his right leg. As Vawter took
the stairs, his determination and concentration enabled the motors, chains and
belts on his 10 lbs. prosthetic leg to coordinate with the ankle and knee
movements. Researchers and officials of the institute cheerfully applauded and
celebrated with Vawter’s fantastic leg performance.
"Everything
went great. The prosthetic leg did its part, and I did my part,” Vawter said in
a Newsday.com report. "A lot of people say that losing a leg is like
losing a loved one. You go through a grieving process. You and establish a new
normal in your life and move on. Today was a big event. It's just neat to be a
part of the research and be a part of RIC," Vawter further shared.
In
preparation for the climb at the Willis Tower, Zac Vawter revealed that he trained
on a small gym escalator. Also, the researchers have adjusted all of the
technological features of the bionic leg to guarantee its response to Vawter’s
thoughts.
Joanne
Smith, the Rehabilitation Institute's CEO, said “This event was a research
project for us. We were testing the leg under extreme conditions. Very few
patients who will use the leg in the future will be using it for this purpose.
From that perspective, its performance was beyond measure.”
Also, Levi
Hargrove, the institute’s Center for Bionic Medicine lead researcher believes
that their team needs more effort to construct rock solid devices that are more
than just a research prototype. "We've come a long way, but we have a long
way to go," Hargrove said.

Experience Fun Learning with Mathletics Student App in iPad
Now that the world’s leading
educational tool Mathletics Student has already been launched on iPad, it is
believed that young learners will definitely enjoy studying more as a result. According
to a recent study by 3P Learning, the motivating force behind Mathletics, two
out of three students can access a hand-held device in their home by 2015 since
tablet computers are quickly becoming the ideal medium for teaching. With that,
the Mathletics Student App is expected to entice more students with its wide-ranging
collection of course outlines and evaluations.
Also, Mathletics has a collection of
reporting and lesson-building tools that are very helpful to teachers and
parents. Designed for the students’ respective skills and ability
ranging from the age of 4-18, a combination of online games, eBooks, syllabus
activities and videos are generated for an entirely engaging learning
environment.
Harry Ohlsen, Head of
the Mobile Development at 3P Learning, said that "The app is a world first
in e-learning. Packing our student interface, extensive curriculum content and
a brand new version of Live Mathletics into a tablet involved significant
technical challenges. We wanted to go beyond simply making Mathletics
work on an iPad, just a website on a tablet - that's not our way. Our user
interface, graphic design and back-end teams all put in 110% over many months
to make this a reality. We hope students enjoy using the app as much as
we enjoyed building it!"
On the other hand, Tim
Power, Managing Director of 3P Learning, declared "Mathletics has long
since ridden the wave of gamification, advancing beyond it to pioneer what we
call the "learnification of gaming". With the advancements in
Mathletics as well as our upcoming developments too, this is a real
next-generation release. We're going far beyond simply using game environments
as a means to engage students. We are creating immersive worlds of learning for
our schools, using the latest technology along the way. The iPad app is just
another way we are achieving this.”
As an accomplishment,
Mathletics has already been declared winner of numerous major awards for
innovation since its establishment back in 2006. Currently, over 2 million
students in more than 150 countries use Mathletics. According to
Heraldonline.com, over 15 billion questions and curriculum activities have been
completed by the students online.
Mathletics
Student is now available in the iTunes App Store where it can be downloaded for
free. Students are required to have an existing Mathletics account or subscription
in order to launch the application. Meanwhile, a sister app for Android tablets is reportedly
scheduled for a release soon.
